While I like this time of year, I don’t decorate my home excessively for the holidays. My roommate and I have a small apartment, so we didn’t want to overcrowd it with Christmas decorations (although nothing against it if that’s your thing!).
We did put up a tree in our living room (those twinkle lights at night), but we didn’t want to overcrowd it with other holiday decorations. A wreath, on the other hand, would be a beautiful and welcome addition to our front entrance.
What’s even better than a wreath like this one? It seems to be appropriate not just for the holidays but also for the rest of the winter season. Step 1: Get Your Materials
To be honest, most of the time when I go into a craft store, I don’t have anything particular on my shopping list. I go off on a tangent, guided by my recorded Pinterest pins and daily bargains. This time was a bit different since I knew I wanted to create a wreath but didn’t have a wish list.
With a wreath in hand, my only approach to details was to pick select stalks and pieces that caught my eye—things that lay somewhere between “glitter explosion” and “grandma’s usual tree at the cabin.”
Instead, I approached the seasonal portion with a fresh perspective. I immediately opted to use a pre-made wreath as a foundation since the wreath wires seemed to be time-consuming, and sometimes you simply have to take it easy on yourself and do what works best for you. With that in mind, my sole guiding principle in terms of specifics was to collect stalks and pieces that caught my eye—things that lay somewhere between “glitter explosion” and “grandma’s customary tree at the cabin.”
Here are some pointers to bear in mind while choosing ornamental details:
Pick a color scheme – Holiday decorations don’t have to be all red and green (!!!). I went for a rustic gold and white color scheme with bursts of warm tones like red and orange. However, I believe a wreath with silver, natural browns, and blue (or something similar) would be lovely!
Play with texture – I believe wreaths are most effective when they include a variety of materials and textures. For example, I used a lot of woodsy elements like gold branches and sprigs of white flowers, but for a more contemporary touch, I used white poms and red berries. In the shop, I also decided to try baking oranges and adding them to the design to bring it down to earth.
Don’t get crazy – The seasonal aisles may be quite crowded this time of year, so limit yourself to 5-6 materials at most. When I was done exploring, I had 11 different kinds in my basket, and it was enjoyable to narrow them down and pick which ones looked best together. Let your imagination go wild! But then you have to cut it down.
Step 2: Preparation
I set out all of the parts and pieces that I purchased to see what I was working with once I had my oranges in the oven (250 degrees for approximately 2 hours, or until they feel dry). I decided to take everything apart so that I could reassemble it into a more fluid composition. Also, don’t forget to bring some scissors and hot glue!
Step 3: Put it all together
This section doesn’t have to follow any exact rules; I’m all for letting your imagination run wild and following your whims! However, this is the procedure I used while creating this wreath as a general guideline.
1. I began by arranging the big ornamental components on the wreath—the branches and sprigs that served as the foundation for the rest of the design. I selected a focal point and adhered each component in opposing directions (without glue!).
2. Using the same method, I equally placed the gold branches on either side.
3. After that, I added the show-stoppers of my materials: the poms and red berries. I arranged them in the focal point I’d created with the branches, matching them up so that each bundle of berries seemed to have one pom “flower.” I began in the middle with the most flashy pieces I had (the gold, sparkling branches) and worked my way outward in a fading ombre effect. Instead of becoming caught at the main point, the glitter guides your sight around the wreath’s circumference.
4. After that, I used the tiny white bulbs I had bought up to fill in some of the gaps.
5. After the oranges had dried, I nestled them in and around all of the other pieces. As I went around the wreath, I concentrated them at the—you got it!—focal point, and then started spacing them out. I chose to chop some of the oranges in half as I got farther away from the main point to make it seem lighter.
